Nutritious Porridge
Hi there, happy people? It's great how we have these norms that cut across cultures and geographical boundaries. Like think about it, every culture has its equivalent of staple food, be it ugali like Kenya, Injera in Ethiopia, Fufu and Gari in West African countries, or Matoke in Uganda. Then who even said that 3 meals in a day is the average minimum of what we should eat regardless of social class. Not that we can't survive on one meal a day but the average is often three.

Well, food is the one thing that unites us as humans all across the world which is quite interesting don't you think? Another thing is good health . We all have our methods of treating illness or even caring for a patient be it at home or in hospital and somehow we know everything stops when a loved one is unwell. What other things level the playing field for humans that you know of?
Growing up we had this belief, I am calling it a belief because, to be honest, I don't have it in me to call it a myth or a misconception because I have seen this work before. So we believed when one got sick the first thing to do before even knowing what they are ailing from is to make sure they have had some porridge. I know some of you can relate to this where you would call mum and say you are sick and the first thing she will ask is have you had some porridge? Is it just me? I don't think so. Now for those who find this bizarre let me elaborate further. In Kenyan communities we hold porridge in such high regard it is literally what makes up 70% of a baby’s initial weaning stage diet. Porridge is also great for breastfeeding mums and pregnant women. Porridge isn't just for a chosen few categories of people though, it is highly nutritious and therefore good for anyone keen on maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and I am guessing that is why you are here right?

I know I haven't sold this to you just yet so let me go deeper so you can understand why our African mothers swore by porridge and why we do too.

Porridge may not win an award for exciting breakfast options but it does win one for a nutritious one. It is loaded with healthy fibers and micronutrients, it improves your overall health, and when you start experimenting and mixing healthy ingredients in your porridge-like nuts you just may find yourself joining our bandwagon. Some of the health benefits of porridge include:
Low in Calories
Porridge offers the richness of a "stick to your ribs" breakfast for surprisingly few calories.
Fiber for Fullness
Some of the biggest health benefits of porridge come from its fiber content. Fiber is important for making your meals more satisfying — it helps fill your stomach without adding calories — and for fighting constipation to keep your digestion regular. A cup of cooked porridge supplies 4 grams of fiber, which is about 15 percent of the daily fiber needed for women and around 10 percent for men. Porridge serves as a rich source of dietary fiber. Soluble fiber -- a type of fiber that interacts with water in your digestive tract to form a gel -- helps control your blood sugar levels and also helps lower blood cholesterol. Insoluble fiber helps fill your stomach after a meal and also fights constipation.
Fortified with Nutrients.
Order your fortified porridge at Maalum Foods and you'll get a wealth of other health benefits. Fortified porridge, for example, has significant amounts of added calcium and phosphorus, both of which benefit your bone health. Porridge also comes fortified with iron, a mineral that supports your metabolism and nourishes your red blood cells. Eat fortified porridge and you'll also get great amounts of B-complex vitamins, which help you produce energy and play a role in your metabolism.
Adaptable for your Diet.
Remember that diet you have been trying to adapt to but have always gotten into a rut? Yes, that diet plan reaching for porridge might help. Porridge can be made from whole grain. It's particularly tasty with millet. In porridge, you can play around with various recipes to get the nutritional value and make it tastier and adaptable like having nuts inside, or cooking it with milk also using a cinnamon stick while boiling the water infuses your porridge with a natural kind of sweetness.
Iron
Porridge helps you get your recommended daily intake of iron. Getting enough iron helps your body make collagen, a protein essential to healthy cartilage and bone. It also helps you make functional red blood cells, boosts immune system function, promotes liver function, and supports your metabolism.
Zinc
Eat porridge as a source of beneficial zinc. You need zinc to nourish your immune system and help you fight off infection, promote wound healing, and aid in cell growth. Zinc also activates a range of enzymes and supports your metabolism.
Since we are on that wining streak how about we go an extra mile by avoiding sugar or saturated fat in our porridge. Instead of sweetening your bowl, calabash, or mug with brown sugar or maple syrup how about you try to add sweetness with stevia, a natural low-calorie sweetener, or with fresh fruit. Use non-fat dairy, almond, or soy milk in your porridge instead of whole-milk dairy to cut down on your saturated fat intake. Add more nutritional value to your bowl by adding healthy toppings, such as nuts and seeds.
